I have had the privilege to visit a handful of palaces, castles, & gardens in the four months that I have lived in Germany. I am in awe by the elaborate grand gardens & towering castles. I personally prefer medieval castles over other styles & I find castle ruins even more charming because of the stories they have to tell. I can't help but daydream that similar stories from Game of Thrones once played out within the ruins. I imagined that here a king once betrayed his queen with his mistress, here a princess danced merrily all night with her future prince, & on this bridge a bloody battle broke out as one throne tried to take another.
Wertheim was built in the 12th century and was partially destroyed in 1619 by gunpowder exploding. In the 30 Years War the Swedes occupied it and it was further destroyed in 1634. It has been restored some and is still currently being restored further since 1982. The city now owns it.
These ruins seemed to never end & that's what I loved about them. It seemed like at every corner there was more to explore. This location had English accommodations written underneath small plaques that were on some of the castle walls explaining what that particular area was meant for originally. The view was breathtaking, offering many views. The serene restaurant located at the top made it even more appealing. This location also had indoor restrooms which I have not yet experienced at castle ruins before.
