When I saw a photograph of the Bastei Bridge on Pinterest I decided a visit was in store. The view and rock formations looked majestic & like nothing I had ever seen before. On the other side of the bridge you can also visit castle ruins and get a variety of views of the bridge and valley. The Neurathen Castle dates back to at least the late 1600's & is the largest rock castle in Saxon Switzerland. Excavation finds which vary from pottery to an old cistern are displayed there.
The mountain formations are called the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Over 100 million years ago the area used to be a shallow sea and due to erosion the mountains were sculpted. The bridge itself was built in 1851 after replacing an old wooden bridge. The bridge has been a tourist destination for as long as America has existed. It is an absolute must for any European vacation!
