The Brandenburg Gate was built between 1789-1791 and was designed after the gate Propylaea. Originally only the royal family was allowed to pass through the middle columns of the gate. The Brandenburg Gate is a monument that throughout it's time has been a site for major historical events. Napolean was the first to use the gate for a triumphal procession.
After WWII, although the gate survived it was badly damaged from bullet holes and explosions close by. Only one horse head survived which is now displayed in the Markisches Museum. After the Cold War East and West Berlin came together to bring the gate to life once more. To this day many U.S. presidents and political figures have spoke at the gate as well.

On another note, have ever gone somewhere & then realized you missed the possibility of meeting someone famous by only hours? FML, that happened to me over spring break when we went to The Brandenburg Gate. The 13 Reasons Why actors were in Berlin Monday when we were. We went to the gate Sunday night, but originally intended to go Monday before we left for my husband to get surgery. Dylan Minnette may be 7 years younger than me, but he is an amazing actor in 13 Reasons Why and in Don't Breathe. I look up to the kid.
