Never in my life have I seen such a beautiful place. The inside of this monastery will blow you away. If you aren't religious it will make you want to drop down to your knees and pray. Over 50 monks stay at the monastery which makes it one of the largest Benedictine houses.
Ettal Abbey was founded on April 28, 1330 by Ludwig of Bavaria. In the 1700's a school was established at the Abbey. The monastery was destroyed in a fire ruining the Gothic style and it was rebuilt to a more Baroque style. The monastery runs a brewery, distillery, bookstore, hotel, a cheese factory, and few other companies. The economic basis depends on the production and selling of these products. The abbey's appearance and maintenance is also kept up by the monks.
