Flossenbürg is known for the concentration camp that once existed there. If you visit the camp you will see pictures of the Reich standing in front of the ruins. The ruins were used, like many castles were in Germany, as a symbol to show those that protested the war the strength of the Nazi's. The first reference of Flossenbürg’s existence was in 948 but the construction of the castle began around the year 1100. It was then destroyed in the Thirty Years War like many of the castles.
Along the hike to the ruins you will see unforgettable views & can even see the Nazi watch towers looming over the concentration camp. The view is eerie, yet beautiful. Something you can only understand by seeing it for yourself. These ruins were the first that we explored here & will always have a soft spot in my heart.
