In the 12th century a Jewish synagogue sat where the Frauenkirche, also known as The Church of Our Lady, is located. It was a swampy land at the time. Eventually this undesirable area became the center of the city. Charles the IV persecuted the Jews & drove them out. Almost 600 Jews were burned to death and in the place of their synagogue he built the church in 1355.
The church of our lady changed many hands from then on & in 1945 it was severely damaged during the bombings of WWII. Only the west façade & choir above it remained intact. From 1983-1991 the church had to be completely renovated.
The entire choir was redesigned according to the Second Vatican Council's guidelines. The bottom portion of the medieval altar in the east was made more modernized in order to make the connection to Judaism & Christianity clear. It reminds one that a synagogue once sat here.
