Dominating the town of Heidelberg, one can easily spot the castle. The views of the Neckar valley from the castle walls are captivating. In the distance you can see the ruins of the monastery and the Heidelberg Bridge as well.
The castle was attacked repeatedly in the 1700's and destroyed in the War of the Grand Alliance by France. According to our brochure, these events are remembered yearly by a firework display. The castle couldn't catch a break. In 1764 the castle was destroyed further by lightening strikes which set it ablaze leaving it in crumbling ruins.

The regular entrance of the castle includes a museum that is wonderful for those in the medical field. It consists of displays of medicine bottles and practices with information in English as well as German. I personally, would suggest doing the tour in order to see all of the castle. Without the tour you cannot visit it in it's entirety.
