One of my favorite trips I have taken in Germany was to the Herrenchiemsee Palace. The palace is located on an island which requires you to take a boat from the dock out to the island. The boat ride is a special treat all on its own. You can view the locals out on the water enjoying their sail boats with the rolling mountains in the background.
Although you can't take photos of the inside of the palace, which is draw dropping, you can take them of the exterior and the gardens so eat your heart out. One of the things that I loved about this palace which King Ludwig built was that not every room is complete. It's really amazing to be able to see one of the dozen rooms that were not completed. It makes you appreciate all of the work and imagination that was put into the beauty of the rooms. She said that the reason the palace was never completed was because Ludwig went bankrupt.
She explained that this palace alone cost more than all of the other palaces did combined to build. Which is really amazing to think of because Ludwig didn't even get to complete the palace. One of my favorite rooms is called the hall of mirrors. We were told that concerts still take place in the room and that up until 1982 all of the candles in the room were still allowed to be lit. The architecture of the room and the chandeliers reminded me a lot the style of the room in the Opera House in Paris. We were told by our guide that it is a replica of the Hall of Mirrors from The Palace of Versailles.
Not only is the interior beautiful, but so is the exterior. The gardens and the deer are worth a stroll as well. Try to go as early as possible in the morning and explore the grounds before the tour. This allows you to avoid the crowds and see the waterworks in full glory every 30 minutes during the summer. Take the full day to thoroughly enjoy the grounds and grab a meal or snack at the restaurant like we did for beautiful views.
