For the past 5 years I have been obsessed with macarons. I found a French bakery in Savannah when I visited my husband, then boyfriend, about 5 years ago called Maison de Macarons. I ordered a box in their pretty packaging & they were wonderful! Just like Laduree, they had so many flavors to choose. If you can't make it to Laduree to try their famous macarons, this is a great substitute. They also have a Laduree in London & New York. If you find yourself in Nuremberg they have some decent ones in a small shop facing the Church of Our Lady as well. I'm a snob about my macarons, so I promise not to send you in the wrong direction. If you find yourself in Georgia you can also check out Doucer de France in Marietta.
SO WHAT IS A MACARON?
SO WHAT IS A MACARON?
Not to be confused with macaroons, the coconut treats, macarons are basically a cookie. However, Laduree's macarons are delicately placed together & filled with ganache. They are not easy to make either according to many. I have been a bit timid about giving it a go. The cookie is made from ground almonds, sugar, & whipped egg whites.
There are many imitation macarons sold in boxes at grocery stores. Even places like TJ MAXX sell them. I call these imitation because they are absolutely terrible. They tend to be stale in texture & tasteless or taste like perfume. One of the reasons these are not like true macarons is that a true macaron is supposed to be refrigerated & only taken out about 15 minutes before you eat them.
So why is Laduree so famous? Well, because of Instagram & Pinterest for one. Not only that but macarons are a French dessert. Plus, just look at how beautiful the packaging is from my macarons below. I bought the mixed assortment of 15 macarons in the Marie Antoinette box. My box was 40 euro & the huge pink macaron above was 8. Although Laduree is not cheap, when it comes to macarons you get what you pay for them & Laduree's are the highest quality.
