Everyone has heard of Berlin, but have you heard of Mödlareuth? In a town an hour & a half outside of Grafenwoehr you will find a small town named Mödlareuth. After WWII the town had only 50 people living in it. The Americans called it Little Berlin, because in 1952 a wall was built to separate the Eastern Soviets from the Western American occupied area. The wall wasn't torn down until a month after the Berlin Wall, 37 years after it had been built.
Families were joyful when the wall was torn down & you can see photographs of this in the museum along with uniforms, contraptions that were created to try to get over the wall, and models of what the town looked like at the time. Little Berlin even has a piece of the Berlin Wall on display. The vehicle exhibition is also an extremely interesting site.
Many famous people have visited the site, George Bush senior is one of them. The town receives more visitors than residents that actually live there, but is in no way as crowded as Berlin gets. If you're like me & you like to avoid tourists this place tends to attract more Germans than Americans. It's an off the beaten path that not many people even know exists.
