More than 61 million people have visited the Neuschwanstein Castle. King Ludwig wanted to live like an old school medieval king and be a recluse in the castle. Who can blame him? Although I think the outside of the castle was overrated and didn't appear the way that I thought it would, the inside was intriguing and had such a distinctive look from other castles that I have visited.
Ludwig had a tendency to isolate himself and typically only spent time with his brother, Otto. It seems the only time he came around was to show off his lavish castles. As our tour guide at Linderhof put it, "Had he not drowned at forty years, which was questionably murder, you would have probably gotten an even better deal for your Bavarian castle pass." I would suggest saving Neuchwantstein for last. If you could see his childhood home Hohenschwangau and then Linderhof first, this would be my suggestion. Take the bus up and down if you can because it is cheaper. Although the horses may seem romantic many complain because of the horses stench. We got stuck walking up and down the hill which was a tough little hike.
