Parkstein, a charming town only about 20 minutes from Grafenwoehr, is built on an inactive volcano. The easy walk up the trail leads you to castle ruins and to the church that is perched at the top of the volcano. It takes less than an hour to explore which makes it a great visit for when you would like to do multiple things in one day. What is nice about these ruins is that you are free to touch and explore them without charge.

Dispersed around the ruins are beautiful religious mosaics. Once you walk the remaining stairs you can take in the view next to the darling, little church. Have a look inside and take a seat on one of the pews as well. Afterwards, enjoy the breath taking views and the unique basalt that juts out of the sides of the volcano.
You’ll really enjoy a little visit here & the best part is that you can go on a Sunday. Pack a picnic and grab a loved one. You’re sure to have a lovely day in the company of good food, a friend, and the view this place has to offer.
