When you visit the Coliseum the tickets include Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. The grounds are less populated because they are so large & not as well known as the Coliseum. I enjoyed taking photos and exploring the Roman Forum out of all three the most. When I go back with my husband I am hoping to go on the tour
Walks of Italy’s ‘VIP Colosseum Underground Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill’ where there is VIP access of the arena floor & you get a view from the third tier seats, along with an underground tour. Avoid waiting in line with a Roma Pass or by joining a tour group for 20 euro. You can find these people walking up and down the lines. This is what we did after we found out the line was 3 hours long and it was only 8:15. Once inside we ditched the tour because I am not a huge fan of tours. This gave us access by 8:30 at which time it was opening.

There is a legend about Hercules defeating Cacus the fire breathing monster on Palatine Hill. The legend says that he struck the hill so hard that it formed a cleft on the southeast corner of the hill, where later a staircase bearing the name of Cacus was constructed. Many affluent Romans took residence on the hill. The great fire of 64 AD destroyed Nero's palace, but he replaced it by 69 AD.
Rome's oldest and most important government buildings were located on or near the Forum. Majority of these buildings being temples. The site originally was a marsh that was drained in the 7th century BC with the building of the Cloaca Maxima, a large covered sewer system that emptied into the Tiber. Above you can see the Temple to Saturn towering above. To me it stood out among many of the other buildings. The use of the building was not only for religious practice, but also functioned as a bank for the Roman Society. I won't bore you with the history of these buildings though any further because you will find out more in your travels there.
FUN FACTS
Majority of the structures were built during Julius Caesar & his successor Augustus' reign.
The excavation for the Forum took over 100 years and was completed in the 20th century.
Many of the buildings were government buildings, not only temples for the gods.
Some of the buildings were dedicated to themselves. They believed that doing this would make them a deity.
