It was strange going from West Berlin to East Berlin and knowing at one point this one not allowed. In this day and age on one side I was able to enjoy multiple flea markets and a young & grungy vibe on one side where the train let me off. On the other I was able to see famous street art, go to a Ramones Museum, and a very popular restaurant located under the train tracks. To think that I wouldn't be allowed to do this broke my heart & knowing that it was not only this that kept people separated from the things they enjoyed, but also from people they loved was saddening.
Instead of repeating to you the history of the Berlin Wall I will state a few interesting facts.
Did You Know?
West Berliners used the Berlin Wall throw away unwanted items & trash. They simply threw it over the wall, because they knew they wouldn't be made to go over it to pick it up.
The famous kissing scene between Soviet Leader Leonid Brezhnec and East Germany President Erich Honecker is a socialist fraternal kiss. It is not as common, but is sometimes shared among leaders as a greeting like a hand shake or kisses on the cheek.
The gate was part of a wall from the 18th century.
There is a part of the Berlin Wall near the Berlin Mall still erected.
It was a miscommunication and a mob that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was said to go into effective immediately which resulted in a mob that persuaded a guard to allow the mob to cross.
The wall did not work on it's own. Checkpoint Charlie & the Brandenburg Gate also helped to divide the country.
There is another wall called Little Berlin that served to divide the country in a smaller town as well.
